The situation
Remote teams had video calls but not context. The physical office — its layout, its rooms, and the sense of where people and things are — disappears on a video grid. For distributed teams working on spatial or design work, that loss of context is a genuine problem.
The brief was to build a digital twin of a real office: a 3D virtual replica that distributed team members could navigate and collaborate inside, accessible through a browser without downloading anything.
What I was brought in to do
Manage delivery of the platform, coordinating 3D designers, Unity developers, and platform engineers across the full build.
What I built
The team built a 3D digital twin of a real-world office environment in Unity, deployed through WebGL for browser-based access. Users could move through the virtual space, interact with the environment, and collaborate without friction — no downloads or installs, just a URL.
The main delivery challenge was the tension between visual fidelity and performance. A 3D environment that looks impressive but takes two minutes to load in a browser is not usable. We used phased delivery to find the right balance, starting with core spatial accuracy and navigation and then adding fidelity once the performance baseline was proven.
I coordinated the Unity and WebGL pipeline across designers and engineers at the same time, since the 3D modelling, the interaction logic, and the deployment pipeline all had to move in step. QA cycles ran across devices and browsers to confirm stability before anything went to stakeholders for review.
The result
The digital twin was accessible in any browser, and distributed teams could navigate a shared 3D office environment without downloads or specialist hardware. It was an emerging-technology build delivered through a structured process and shipped to the agreed scope.
