The situation
Career coaching existed — but access to it was unstructured. People found mentors through word of mouth, LinkedIn cold messages, or paid platforms with no real matching logic. The client wanted to fix that with a platform that made the mentor-mentee relationship structured, trackable, and scalable.
The challenge with two-sided platforms is that both sides have to work simultaneously. A platform with great coaches and no mentees is worthless. A platform with eager mentees and no coaches is frustrating. Getting both sides onboarded, matched, and engaged from launch is the real delivery problem — not the features.
What I was hired to do
Own end-to-end delivery. Concept to production, five months.
What I actually built
A web platform where mentors build profiles with skills, experience, and availability, and mentees define goals, experience level, and what they’re looking for. Profile-based matching connects them. Once matched, structured goal setting, progress tracking, and virtual session management keep the relationship moving forward.
The onboarding workflow was where most of the design time went — if either side didn’t complete it properly, the matching logic produced bad results. Ran iterative feedback sessions with real coaches and mentees during development to validate that the onboarding captured what actually mattered, not just what we assumed mattered.
Agile delivery with tight QA cycles on the matching logic and communication features. A broken match is worse than no match — it erodes trust in the platform before it has a chance to prove itself.
The result
A production-ready two-sided platform launched in five months. Mentors could be found, mentees could be matched, and coaching relationships had structure and accountability built in from day one.
